2. Hohenschwangau Castle

If you’re already planning to visit Neuschwanstein Castle, don’t forget to swing past Hohenschwangau Castle. It’s literally a little further down the road and was built long before Neuschwanstein. Although Hohenschwangau Castle isn’t as popular as Neuschwanstein, it’s still an incredibly beautiful castle in Germany.

The castle was first mentioned in the 12th century. However, the current building only dates to the 19th century. It was built by King Maximilian II and was the childhood home of King Ludwig II. 3. Eltz Castle

Eltz Castle is an ancient medieval castle and is one of the oldest and best-preserved castles in Germany. It dates to the 12th century and is still home to the Eltz family. They’ve owned the castle for 33 generations.

Even though the Eltz family still lives there, it’s still possible to visit Eltz Castle. A family feud in the 12th century, however, resulted in the castle being divided into three parts. 4. Schwerin Castle

Schwerin Castle is an incredibly beautiful castle in northern Germany that you must not miss. It’s located in the most beautiful fairytale surroundings on an island in a large lake in the town of Schwerin. Cochem Castle is a beautiful castle in Germany. Over the last nearly 1,000 years, it has been destroyed and rebuilt several times. The present castle on the site was built in 1868 in a beautiful neo-Gothic style.

Surrounded by lovely vineyards, the castle is located on a hilltop in the town of Cochem in western Germany. 11. Frankenstein Castle

Frankenstein Castle is located on a hilltop near the town of Darmstadt, about an hour’s drive south of Frankfurt am Main. Despite not being one of the most popular castles in Germany, Frankenstein Castle is still worth a visit.

The old castle dates back to the 12th century. Although not known for sure, it’s believed that Frankenstein Castle has been a great inspiration for the world-famous novel Frankenstein. The castle served as a prison and a military hospital in the 17th century. And in fact, medical experiments have been performed at the castle too.

As a result of the scary story, the castle hosts many spooky events throughout the year. The most popular is Germany’s largest Halloween festival, held every year in October. Please note that tickets must be purchased in advance and that they’re sold out quickly.

12. Nymphenburg Palace

Nymphenburg Palace is located in Munich in southern Germany. This palace is one of the largest royal castles in Europe and one of the most beautiful castles in the world. It was formerly used as a summer residence for royalty but is today administered by the state.
